COMMUNITY JOINS SEARCH FOR BOW & ARROW HUNTER
29 May 2011:
The Australian Society for Kangaroos has increased it’s reward to $2,000 for information leading to the Cowra bow and arrow hunter responsible for this cruel act.
ASK Coordinator Nikki Sutterby said,
“Thanks to generous donations from the community, the Australian Society for Kangaroos has increased its reward to $2000 for information leading to the conviction of the person responsible for the bow and arrow attack on a mother kangaroo carrying a joey at Wyangala Dam, near Cowra NSW this month”.
“Kangaroos are intelligent and sensitive creatures with complex social and family bonds. The suffering inflicted on this kangaroo would have caused her immense pain and stress and her joey and the rest of the mob. Her death may have also caused a dependent at foot joey to be orphaned. The person responsible needs to be brought to justice”, said Ms Sutterby.
Kangaroos are protected under the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act with breaches attracting fines of up to $11,000 or 6 months imprisonment. A Melbourne man received a 12 month sentence for a similar attack on kangaroos in Melbourne last year.
Ms Sutterby said,
“If anyone has any information that may help police in their investigations please contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333000 or Inspector Anthony McLean at Cowra police on 02 63415099”.
“Thank you to WIRES, Belinda Green and everyone in the community who has contributed to the reward and supported the investigation so far”
