Joeys killed illegally for Bathurst car race: wildlife groups allege

Bathurst races kangaroo cull

23 June 2010:

The Australian Society for Kangaroos has lodged a formal complaint to the NSW Police Commissioner and the NSW RSPCA, against the Bathurst Council for allegedly killing 88 joeys illegally at Mt Panorama in preparation for the Bathurst 1000 car race.

“After investigating documents provided through Freedom of Information, it has been revealed that eighty eight joeys were killed on Mount Panorama in September 2009 without a permit, therefore in possible breach of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act”, stated Nikki Sutterby, Co Ordinator, Australian Society for Kangaroos.

The Society made a second complaint to the RSPCA and Police, that the Bathurst Council allegedly breached the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act when it killed all 228 kangaroos and joeys at Mt Panorama.

“The kangaroos on Mt Panoroma were successfully herded off the track in 2008 and there were no incidents during the car race that year. To go in and kill over 200 of them the following year when there were proven non lethal alternatives, may also be in breach of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act”.

“It is also important for the public to know that these joeys were shot in the pouch”, stated Ms Sutterby.

The society has requested that the NSW Police Department and the RSPCA take appropriate legal action.
