OUR NATIONAL UNIVERSITY is KILLing OUR NATIONAL ICON

In 2015 the Australian National University, Kioloa Coastal Campus (ANU) announced plans to shoot 90 eastern grey kangaroos and their joeys at their Kioloa campus in NSW. ASK immediately engaged with local media and were given a platform by local newspapers to express our concerns. We also took to ANU’s Facebook page to express our concerns publicly. ASK provided a submission to ANU and phoned them many times in an effort to find an alternative, but our calls and emails went unanswered. ASK then engaged one incredibly brave and committed local resident who posted signs against the kill on university grounds, and in collaboration with ASK carried out an extensive Freedom of Information investigation which revealed that ANU had applied to National Parks and Wildlife Service to kill 600 kangaroos, but were refused by the government who issued a permit for just 90. The documents exposed that ANU was very sensitive to negative public attention about past culls. We are still seeking the most recent documents but we do know that ANU didn’t kill the 90 kangaroos they were authorised to within the time period and applied for another permit mid year. Thank you to everyone who wrote letters to ANU and expressed their concerns.
