Memorial outside BNTS Gates where 512 Kangaroos Slaughtered
19 May 2009:Â
A Dawn Memorial service was held today in Canberra for the 512 Eastern Grey Kangaroos and their joeys who were killed at the Belconnen Naval Transmission Station on this day last year.
MEMORIAL OUTSIDE THE BNTS GATES
“It was on this day exactly a year ago that the machinery of government contractors commenced the systematic massacre of these kangaroos over the next 11 days. Canberra’s day of shame. 512 kangaroos perished at the hands of these mercenaries. They are not forgotten.”, said Mr Clifton today.
Despite the Australian Defence Department agreeing to trial a Scientific Relocation of these beautiful animals they later reneged claiming it would cost $3 million. It was later revealed that the trial would have only cost $750,000 and that Australia Zoo had offered to move the kangaroos for less than half that price at only $300,000. It has been estimated that it cost nearly half a million dollars to kill them.
No credible scientific evidence has ever been provided by the Department of Defence or the ACT Government to support claims the kangaroos were damaging grasslands. The site is now slated to be developed into a housing estate.
