Call for RSPCA to come clean on kangaroo cull

ACT government prepares to kill another 3,427 kangaroos and their joeys in Canberra Nature Parks today, the RSPCA is supporting a massacre

2 June 2011:

As the ACT government prepares to kill another 3,427 kangaroos and their joeys in Canberra Nature Parks today, the RSPCA is supporting a massacre that will see thousands of joeys shot, decapitated and orphaned.

Australian Society for Kangaroos Coordinator Nikki Sutterby announced today: “We are calling on the ACT RSPCA to come clean on why they are condoning the slaughter of thousands of healthy native animals and their young in the absence of credible evidence”.

“It seems suspicious that they have a no kill policy for healthy cats and dogs, yet native wildlife are exempt from this policy”.

“We want to know what funding they have received from the ACT government, because they appear very supportive of these killing programs. We also want to know what science the RSPCA has based their support on?”

“ Kangaroos are sensitive and intelligent creatures with complex social and family bonds. They have been observed to suffer significant grief and stress when members of their mob are killed. The annual killing of thousands of kangaroos across Canberra’s parks and reserves is causing long term trauma and suffering for those left behind, particularly mothers and joeys”.

This years cull of 3427 kangaroos by the ACT government across Canberra Nature parks will see around 1000 joeys decapitated, shot in the head and orphaned.
