Activists vow to stop kangaroo shootings
21 March 2011:
The Australian Society for Kangaroos has vowed to physically intervene to stop North Melbourne Institute of TAFE from killing any more kangaroos at Eden Park Melbourne The Australian Society for Kangaroos has set up a 24 hour vigil near the site, and will take whatever action necessary to stop this cruel and unnecessary slaughter of kangaroos at NMIT from continuing.
“We will be there every day, and every night, watching them and filming them, and if they chase any kangaroos, herd them on motorbikes or take one shot we will be there to stop them”, said Nikki Sutterby, Coordinator, Australian Society for Kangaroos.
This action came after local residents pleaded for help after hearing kangaroos being shot, night after night, and seeing them terrorised and chased by NMIT in cars and on motorbikes.
“These people have nowhere else to turn. The responsible authorities have ignored them. So we feel its up to us now to stop this cruelty and save any kangaroos that may have survived”, said Ms Sutterby.
“The Department of Sustainability and Environment should suspend this destruction permit immediately. Apparently NMIT has been shooting kangaroos for months, and has killed most of the population, yet they did not inform police beforehand as they were legally required to do. They have breached the conditions of their permit and it should therefore be suspended”, said Ms Sutterby.
The Australian Society for Kangaroos will be at the site from Monday 21st March. They will be watching and listening and if any shooting starts, they will take drastic action to stop it. If you would like to help with the vigil or hear or see any shooting or cruelty at NMIT, please contact Australian Society for Kangaroos immediately. We need all the eyes and ears we can to make sure NMIT doesn’t kill any more kangaroos.
